September fox employs decoy

The September Fort Wayne Radio Club fox (hidden transmitter) hunt included this decoy.
See more photos from the fox hunt in this website’s photo gallery.

The September foxhunt occurred on 13 September, a gorgeous early fall day. Turns out that three hunter teams were available for this contest. The first team consisted of Steve and Linda Nardin, W9’s SAN and LAN plus their grandson Alex. The second team included Charles Ward, KC9MUT, Fred Gengnagel, KC9EZP and Robert Dean, KC9UHU. The third team consisted of Kim and Jim Machamer, KB9’s DOS and DOT. This motley crew awaited the 146.160 MHz emissions from the fox at their starting point of Cobin Memorial Park.

Carole and Al Burke, WB9’s RUS and SSE served as the fox for this contest. The Pliett’s, Jim and Annie, couldn’t attend this one as they were up at Soaring Eagle attempting to break the bank. So it was up to the Burke’s to find a hide-out for the furry little quarry.

Now it turns out that Carole has been hanging out a bit with Kim lately and it seems that some of the Machamer’s crafty (fox hiding) ways have rubbed off on Carole because she picked out a fairly devious spot to ensconce the thing. Although Al objected, muttering that “even Charles, Fred and Robert wouldn’t be this cruel”, Carole had her way and made Al set up the high power fox on the western shore of the St. Joe river on the River Greenway adjacent to the Griswold play lot, with a clear view of the eastern shore of the river. The high power fox consisted of a jumper-battery powered mobile rig pumping about 50 watts into a 4-element yagi aimed south-southeast. (Carole made Al lug all of this stuff from the car, hidden in the Oak River Apartments parking lot, to their lair on the River Greenway…..and batteries, for one, are heavy). Then she made him stash the microfox itself across the river in the ballast rock that lines the eastern shore of the river near Northside Drive and St. Joe Blvd. Then she made him fabricate a decoy microfox in the form of a large Bob Evans coffee cup complete with a fake antenna, and with the sign “Nope” printed on the side of it, and had him stash it on the western shore of the river quite near their (high power fox) lair, in order to draw the foxhunters in. (Yes, sometimes it’s like living with Erwin Rommel).

FWRC September meeting Friday

No Comments on FWRC September meeting Friday

Please join us on Friday night, September 18th, for the Fort Wayne Radio Club’s general meeting. It starts at 7 p.m. at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church at 4700 Vance Avenue in Fort Wayne, just south of Snider High School. It will be a busy meeting with the following topics:

1.) FWRC T-Shirts. If you ordered one, it will be there. Plus, we have ordered some extra shirts if you would like to buy one.

2.) There is a lot to discuss on repeater topics. We will be taking a vote on antenna repairs for the Robison Park 146.76 MHz repeater. The top antenna has been acting very poorly, so we would like to replace it and keep the 76 at top performance.

3.) Our high-profile repeater project is being considered. We have decided that the 146.94 MHz machine would be ideal to move to the WLDE Parrot Road site, if the club votes to go ahead with this project. This would give us an ARES machine that has great coverage of northeasternio Indiana. Included would be the D-STAR machine from the Masonic Temple. We would move this to have wide coverage on digital, plus give us much easier access to the system.

4.) On the systems at IPFW, we need to remove the ATV repeater because the school is placing a LPFM radio station on the tower. At the same time, we would like to have the 91 antenna placed onto the extended side mounts that we picked up from the Parkview tower take down. This should give us better coverage for 91. We are also working on a receiver de-sense issue there as well. It has been suggested that we move the ATV system to the Parkview site and make it run with 432 output as well as input, to get away from the 902 MHZ metering system interference and allow easier access to ATV.

5.) We will also have our “Home Brew” contest during the break. If you have an amateur radio item you have built yourself, either recently or in the past, please consider bringing it along to show.

6.) Another important club activity is nominations for club offices. The election is next month at the meeting. It is OK to self nominate if you are interested in serving the club. Please think about it; clubs need a good turnover of officers to keep things interesting!

7.) We will have the Fox Hunt Chronicles, from this weekend’s hunt.

8.) ARES needs more operators for the Fort 4 Fitness events on September 26th. We need about 25 operators to provide good coverage.

9.) We’ll have a report on the INPOTA operation! Good fun, we need to do it next year.

10.) The presentation will be by Charles, KC9MUT, and Jim, KB9IH, on new uses for the those inexpensive SDR (software-defined radio) dongles.

11.) We need to ask for the club’s ideas on fund-raising raffles, etc, for the new high-profile project.

Whew! A lot to do, a lot going on in ham radio for the FWRC. See you at the meeting.

All are welcome, we will see you there!

Over this past weekend, the FWRC participated in the Fort Wayne Maker’s Faire for the second time. The event was a success, and we had a lot of interested people checking out what Amateur Radio can do, and how we are amoung the original “Maker’s”. This great effort owes a lot to the following FWRC hams:

K9RFZ
WB9SSE
KU8T
K9BLI
KC9MUT
KA9SLN
W9GT
KC9UHU
KC9ZDA
W9SAN

The Maker’s Faire demonstates the fun that you can have making things and exploring technology! These are not foreign concepts to us Hams!

Fort Wayne Club fox hunt participants with microtransmitter fox

The August foxhunt occurred on 2 August on a beautiful, sunny, non-monsoony (for a change) day. Two hunter teams were available for this contest. The first team consisted of Jim & Annie Pliett, K9OMA & KA9YYI, plus Carole & Al Burke, WB9’s RUS & SSE. The second team consisted of Charles Ward, KC9MUT, Fred Gengnagel, KC9EZP and Robert Dean, KC9UHU. Both teams awaited the 146.430 MHz emissions from the fox at their starting point of Cobin Memorial Park.

Jim & Kim Machamer, KB9’s DOS & DOT served as the fox. Their high power fox consisted of a mobile rig driving a yagi, and they were located where the southern segment of Young Rd. abuts I-469. They placed the micro-fox up against the chain link fence that runs parallel to the west-bound lane of I469 where the northern segment of Young Rd. abuts I-469. I-469 bisects Young Rd, and there is no overpass or underpass that allows one to get from the north to the south segment of (the bisected) Young Rd. directly. In other words Jim & Kim were sitting in their van on Young Rd. just to the south of I-469 and could look across I-469 to the southern segment of Young Rd., and to where the microfox was located. Sorta sneaky.
