May fox hides along Fort Wayne’s trail system

Fort Wayne Radio Club members use special, portable antennas to search for a radio transmitter hidden along Fort Wayne's trail system during what ham radio operators call a "fox hunt."

The fourth fox (hidden transmitter) hunt of 2018 occurred on 6 May, 2018, a slightly overcast but otherwise simply gorgeous spring afternoon. Two teams arrived at the starting point at Cobin Memorial Park in anticipation of the hunt beginning at 13:30 hours. The first team consisted of Charles Ward, KC9MUT and Fred Gengnagel, KC9EZP. The second team included Steve and Linda Nardin W9’s SAN & LAN and their grandson Alex (who celebrated his 20th birthday the day before).

The fox function was provided by Carole & Al Burke, WB9’s RUS & SSE. (Their usual partners, Sir Jim & Lady Ann Pliett could not attend as they were on a cruise experiencing the British Isles. Jim said if they had time they were going to stop by and check out the new Prince Louie).

Al & Carole decided to locate the fox on the Puffer-Belly jogging trail about half-way between DuPont Rd. and Carroll Rd. in La Cabreah. So they set up the high power fox in a little clearing just off the trail. They planted a five element yagi on a mast at about ten feet, pointed south, and drove it with a 20 watt mobile rig.

FWRC On-Line Auction Is in Progress

No Comments on FWRC On-Line Auction Is in Progress

The auction has started. Anyone wishing to place bids on items must register at WWW.BIDKALL.com prior to doing so. Please note that the item numbers have all been changed from the initial list and there have been a few corrections. Item #30 was mistakenly listed as an ICOM IC-756. It is in fact an IC-765 transceiver. Also, the Elecraft K3 and P3 items are sn # 4810 and 751 respectively.

As before, for questions please e-mail me, Steve, W9SAN@ARRL.NET.

Multi Auction Sale by Fort Wayne Radio Club

Many of you have no doubt heard talk on the repeaters of another FWRC Silent Key Auction. OK, this has been in the works for a while now and we are just about ready to begin. Actually, it is several auctions rolled into one! We have two people here in the Fort who have equipment from either a spouse or father that were amateurs. Also, one local ham can no longer use his gear, so his daughter has asked that we let it go. Plus, there has been equipment donated to the club (one rig and one tower), and to top it all off, the folks at ACARTS have some surplus stuff that they need to clean out so they can reduce the size of their rental locker space. Whew!

This is intended to be a “local pickup” kind of auction as we do not want to get into shipping stuff around the country. So, bear that in mind when bidding.

We intend to run this as an on-line auction by using the software at the Auction company that Paul, KA3OPZ, works for. The tentative plan is to start the auction on May 7th, and let it run through Memorial Day, May 28th. Payment and pickup will be the following week, at the FWRC club meeting on June 15th.

More details will follow shortly, but I think you have been waiting for the list of gear long enough, so it is included below. We will be filling in the information on the result of our testing as we go forward, so you can make informed decisions. Plus, we will be calling for volunteers to help take down the two towers mentioned in the list. Questions can be sent to Steve, W9SAN, at w9san@arrl.net

Payment is intended to be cash, certified check, or money order payable to the Fort Wayne Radio Club.

Ham ops still needed for April 28 ultramarathon

Glacial Esker 40 Ultramaraton banner image

As of midday Friday, April 27, communications help was still needed for the Glacial Esker 40 ultramarathon at Chain O Lakes State Park near Albion tomorrow, April 28. Emergency coordinator Dan Ward, N9WLW informed advised that approximately two dozen 2.5-hour ham radio shifts remain open between 6 a.m. and late afternoon!

This is a great way to spend some time in a lovely state park while helping to assure the safety of runners. It’s also a good opportunity to practice the kind of tactical communications we’ll use in support of weather and other emergencies.

If you can help, please contact Dan at n9wlw@yahoo.com. And please share this information, to help drum up more volunteers!

Amateur radio license exams planned May 5

No Comments on Amateur radio license exams planned May 5

Volunteer examiners will offer amateur radio license examinations in Fort Wayne May 5. They will conduct the exams at the offices of the Boy Scouts of America Anthony Wayne Area Council, 8315 West Jefferson Blvd.

Despite the West Jefferson address, the office is accessed by taking the access road across from the entrance to Lutheran Hospital. The Boy Scout office is at the south end of that access road, just beyond Extended Stay America. The examiners will be in the basement, next to the Kitchen.

They will offer exams for all classes of amateur radio licenses. No appointment is necessary. Persons wishing to take exams may check in from 9 to 11 a.m. They will need $14 for the exam fee, a photo ID and a second form of ID. Amateurs who hope to upgrade to a higher license class must also bring a photo copy of their current license to leave with the application.

After May 5, testing will be available two more times in Fort Wayne this year; August 4 at the Boy Scout office and November 17, during the Fort Wayne Hamfest at the Allen County War Memorial Colisuem.
